Meet the Team: Heather Heaney, Registered Massage Therapist

Meet the Team: Heather Heaney, Registered Massage Therapist

One of our team members who has been with us the longest is our registered massage therapist, Heather Heaney. After being away for the last month, it seems like the perfect time to reintroduce this talented practitioner.

A passionate advocate for women’s health, a dedicated mom and an animal lover, Heather brings a ton of experience to our team. Here is what she had to say when describing her journey as a massage therapy.

1. What led you to your particular field?

I became a massage therapist when I was 25. I grew up watching my dad grow his massage therapy career from nothing to now being fully booked a month in advance. It wasn’t something I ever thought would interest me, but the more I thought about it the more it grew on me. As well I needed a career that would allow me to work around my son’s schedule. I took the Sutherland- Chan weekend Relaxation Massage class and found it was something I enjoyed. Following that, I enrolled in the two year Massage Therapy program.

My journey of becoming a massage therapist was truly special to me. I was in school at the same time my son was in kindergarten. Each night we would sit at the kitchen table and do our homework together. He would ask me if I behaved at school, if I upset a teacher or classmate. He would want to know if I did well on a test or an exam. He thought it was so funny that we were going to school at the same time. It showed him that whether you are 5 or 25 you can always learn more in life and to never give up on yourself.

2. What are you passionate about in your work?

My passion is women’s health. The more knowledge women have about their bodies the better informed decisions they will make. I believe that clients should actively participant in their recovery rather than relying on someone else to make all the decisions on their behalf. Being an active partner with your healthcare provider is the key. During my 15 years of being a massage therapist I have realized that many women are unaware of the therapies specific to female conditions and are surprised when I recommend a treatment that would address the issue presented.

3. How does your practice relate to how you live personally?

While I was growing up my mother was the office manager of a holistic health centre and my father was a registered massage therapist. I would regularly receive treatment to help the aches and pains of my growing body from massage, to homeopathy to chiropractic treatments.  It was and has always been a normal way of life for me and my family. 30 years ago it would have been called “alternative living” but now these therapies are highly sought after and now they are a normal part of life for many people.

4. When you are not at Body Co, you are most likely……..?

Outside of work I am really passionate about  fitness, nutrition and my dog. 3 years ago I became vegan. I am always looking up new things to cook/ bake, continuing to educate myself about the proper healthy balanced vegan diet. I also love to snuggle my sweet little dog Kiki. I am a proud mom of a soon to be 20 year old.

5. If you could impart one piece of wisdom to your clients, what would it be?

My advice to people is to know your body, address its issues and it will serve you well in the years to come.

Heather is available at Body Co on Monday afternoons and evenings as well as Wednesday mornings and is currently accepting new patient appointments.
