Meet the Team: Sandra Ghaly, Paediatric and Pelvic Physiotherapist

Anyone who can calm my children in under 30 seconds is a miracle worker in my books. Sandra Ghaly, our pelvic floor and paediatric physiotherapist is nothing short of that title. Best known for her caring yet empowering nature, Sandra is carving out her niche as one of only two physiotherapists in the city of Toronto specializing in children’s pelvic health. We could not be happier that this Egyptian born, Maritime loving physio landed at Body Co.

Learn more about Sandra in her own words in this week’s Meet the Team profile.
What led you to your particular field?
Since I can remember. I have always been fascinated by the human body. More specifically, I am interested in how the body moves, thinks and it’s ability to heal itself. For that reason, going into the field of physiotherapy was a no-brainer. However, it wasn’t until I began physio school when I learned that this field goes way beyond just athletes and sports injuries. I was lucky enough to combine my two passions – paediatrics and physiotherapy – into one and worked as a paediatric physiotherapist for several years. Just recently, I became certified in pelvic floor physiotherapy and currently treat women and children of all ages and their pelvic floors.
If you had asked me two years ago if I’d ever become a pelvic floor physiotherapist, I probably would have laughed and cringed all at once. I did not think the pelvic floor was either fascinating or important. Then, I started to learn about it. I met moms who complained of issues during and after pregnancy. I learned that children could get treatment for bed-wetting. And most importantly, I realized that my pelvic floor was sub-par, at best. I decided to get certified because I wanted to make a difference and I’ve never looked back since. Pelvic floor physiotherapy has become my all-time love and I look forward to practicing it for my lifetime!
What are you passionate about in your work?
The most inspiring, empowering and strong women I get to meet every single day. I learn as much from my patients as they (hopefully) learn from me. I also get to work with the most precious babies and the coolest kids that never fail to brighten my day.
How does your practice relate to how you live personally?
I truly believe that to be a good practitioner you must practice what you preach. Education is a huge part of my job and I’m always teaching my patients how to breathe, relax, strengthen, stretch and get in touch with their bodies. When life gets busy and self-care is not always on my priority list, my practice reminds me to take a step back, reset and restart.
Do you have anything exciting to share on the horizon (i.e. a project you are working on, a new treatment you are introducing, a workshop you would love to share)?
I’ve always been a lover of education and am constantly submerging myself in the newest courses to further my practice. This year, I am hoping to get certified in pilates (my third love) and combine it together with my physiotherapy practice to give my patients that one-on-one therapeutic exercise that they so often want and need.
When you are not at Body Co, you are most likely……..?
Believe it or not, I actually love cleaning and organizing – so you’ll probably find me dusting the picture frames or re-organizing my husband’s office. I also love being in the kitchen, trying and tasting new recipes.  When not at home, you’ll find me participating in some form of exercise or planning my next vacation.
Please share 2-5 things about yourself that others might now know and find interesting.
1- I’m a dog enthusiast
2- I have an “emergency kit” that I can’t go anywhere without – it includes bandaids, Tide-to-Go, floss, a tape measure and hand sanitizer
3- I completed my physio school at Dalhousie and fell in love with the East Coast – I go back any chance I get
4- I was born and spent most of my childhood in Cairo, Egypt.
5- I’ve had scoliosis my entire life that’s most often mistaken for an “attitude problem” when standing with my arms crossed.
